Passing of a Giant

Remind me not to be sitting at a bar with a 24 year old the next time someone famous over the age of 40 dies. I was doing just that at about 9 pm on April 18, 2012 when I saw Dick Clark's face on a muted TV and commented, Oh, he finally looks old. Which drew no response from my cohort. I said he looked the same age for decades but now since his stroke he has finally aged. No discernible response. Then the words Dick Clark dies at 82 come up on the screen. A wave of sadness comes over me. I loudly, impulsively say Dick Clark died. To which my friend replies, Oh.

Oh. And then he returns to talking about what ever banality he was speaking of. Then we get caught up in the game of trivia that was going on around us, and the moment is lost. Michal Jackson dies and the country gasps and the internet has a stroke. Whitney Houston dies and no one can speak of anything else for 2 weeks. Dick Clark dies and no one under 35 even notices. Dick Clark may have never written a song, or recorded one, but almost single handedly did more for American music, especially Rock N Roll that almost anyone else. He kept in on the radio and more importantly kept it on TV. The youth of today watches music videos constantly now, mostly on You Tube I suppose, but there was a time when you could see new bands and performers LIVE, daily from 1957 until 1963, and then weekly for another 24 years. Live bands. Every week. Why that doesn't exist today is hard to fathom. The presumption would be our lack of attention span.

I mourn the loss of not just Dick Clark, but a generation, and a culture.

 Long live Rock-n-Roll.

 Long live Dick Clark.

When planning your life just make sure it has a good beat and you can dance to it.

Are we really all just stupid cattle?

I need something to restore my faith in humanity. Right now I just believe that the are all stupid and incapable of common sense or of taking care of them selves. How do we fix this problem?

For reference

Talking to a woman for 10 minutes who asks your age and you say 37 during her pause and then she says I would have guessed 32 will set you back 20 min and a whole bar on a pub crawl.

You'd think I'd know better

Cajun Chicken Sandwich for dinner + alcohol + White Castle at 2am + Chicken Fingers and fries for lunch the next day = Bad Idea.

Who knew?

Have you ever asked yourself, what would it be like to shave my head? Well the answer is... Liberating!

Absolutely liberating. Shaving my head was more fun than I have had in a long time. Well at least since Friday. I was giggling like an eight year old the whole time. I took a bunch of pictures, but unfortunately I am using a borrowed camera and do not have the USB cord I need to download the pics to my computer so I can share them with you here. I hope to do so soon.

I am going across the street now so I can listen to the Philarican scream and giggle.

The origin

Apparently not everyone spends as much time on the web as I do. There is apparently a type of music where they just sing the melody and do not use any words. The following video is an example of that and went viral on the web a few months ago. It has since shown up in remixes and many different forms including the robot head I posted yesterday.

Enjoy.

Update

I can't believe it's been a week. But I'm here to tell you that things got better. After paying my tIckets I called a cab which arrived in under 5 minutes and it was driven not just by a female can driver but an attractive female cab driver. Finding a young cute female cab driver in the city of Chicago is about as rare as getting a real diamond ring in a box of Cracker Jack. And she was intelligent and fun to talk to and married. So the story doesn't end as well as it could have but at least I had a great cab ride.

An hour later my brother called me back and was willing to let me use his car, so I got to work only 3 hours late but the hours were covered and alll was right with the world.

Thank you for all the comments. I do want to reply to some of them. As for paying my bills on time, since he beginning of the year my hours were cut and I am making $800-$1200 less a month (yes I am working on getting another job). If anyone out there is able to live on $1200 less a month please contact me privately and I will tell you where to send the money.

As for avoiding parking tickets,

Model Citizen aka Bonnie Rue wrote:

my neighbor used to live in chicago and he said parking tickets were almost a daily issue. He mentioned the amount of money he paid for said tickets and I was blown away - I thought maybe it was his fault and he deserved it.. but - he never gets any parking tickets here in Austin. Chicago must just love to hand them out.
I hope your luck has tuned around.

Yes, avoiding parking tickets in Chicago is like avoiding smog in LA or avoiding rude people in NYC, pert near impossible.

Good Night and Good Luck.

If I didn't have any bad luck....

I wouldn't have any luck at all.

So I've been working on a deficit for 4 months now and I can barely pay for food some extras have fallen by the wayside. Like parking tickets for example. I paid a $240 parking ticket last month and have 3 parking tickets left to pay. I got paid today and the first thing I did was pay my rent the second thing I did was make a note to pay my parking tickets on line as soon as I get to work.

I took a shower, shaved, got dressed, packed up all my stuff and left the house. On time I may add. And walked out to my car to find a beautiful yellow boot on my car.

So now I'm standing in line at a City of Chicago revenue office waiting to pay my tickets. And a boot fee. And then pay a cab to get back home so I can sit on my porch and wait for them to remove the boot.

The only good news is that I managed to find someone to cover my first few hours at work.

I will try to keep you updated on the calamity that is my life.

Good Night and Good Luck

Ice Cream! Ice Cream! I scream for Ice Cream

I was walking downstairs from my apartment and before I reached the outside door I heard a familiar sound. A sound everyone who grew up in America can recognize. The Ice Cream Truck! I say The because we all know there is only one. Kinda like Santa Claus, everywhere all at once. I know it may look different each time but it's like the department store santas. They may look dissimilar but we know it's Santa here to bring us joy.

And the little boy in my squealed with delight and I felt the urge to bolt out the door running full speed down the street yelling Ice Creaaaaam at the top of my lungs!

I resisted. And now I'm sad. Let down. Like when I was a child I couldn't get money from mom fast enough and by the time I reached the street the music and the truck were a fading memory turning the corner out of reach, not to be back until tomorrow or if it was early enough on a summer day later that night just after dinnertime.

So many of the things from our childhood are dissapearing. Due to technology or due to the fact parents are too afraid to let there kids outside. I hope The Ice Cream Truck is never one of them.
